The 2012 Paralympics have officially opened in London today. In what promises to be the biggest paralympics yet with 2.3-2.4 million tickets sold, Stephen Hawking spoke to the crowd. "Look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of
what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be
curious." 4,200 athletes from 165 countries will compete for 503 medals in 20
sports. A total of 165 countries are set to compete.
The most detailed article on the subject comes from the South African News in Mail and Guardian. It goes in depth explaining an interesting fact that the richer countries average more medals, and in the paralympics there is even more of a gap between poor and rich countries due to the equipment.

Two different articles both give general overviews of the paralympics, one from China and one from Qatar.

And finally from BBC news there is a photo gallery of the opening ceremonies which is quite stunning.
